Mandarin Chinese tones are represented with the following diacritical marks:
ä, ë, ï, ö, ü = tone 1 (level)
á, é, í, ó, ú = tone 2 (rising)
â, ê, î, ô, û = tone 3 (falling-rising)
à, è, ì, ò, ù = tone 4 (falling)
Cantonese tones are (poorly) approximated with the same system.
